Bausch & Lomb ReNu with MoistureLoc
On April 13, 2006, Bausch & Lomb announced that it was withdrawing ReNu with
MoistureLoc products due to an increase in a condition known as Fusarium
Keratitis. In May of 2006, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) released a
statement confirming a global recall of Bausch & Lomb ReNu with MoistureLoc
Contact Lens
Cleaning Solution. Fusarium keratitis is an inflammation of the cornea due to a
fungal infection. As of May 9, 2006, the Centers for Disease Control had
received
report of 106 confirmed cases, 12 possible cases and 80 cases still under
investigation.
Fusarium keratitis symptoms include:
- Blurred vision
- Pain in eyes even when contact has been removed;
- Increased sensitivity to light
- Excessive tearing and discharge
- Corneal ulcers
- Loss of vision
- Severe cases can lead to severe corneal scarring and require
corneal
transplantation.
